Mormons essentially believe that salvation is indeed a free gift, and pretty much everyone will go to heaven. But exaltation into God's full presence is not. Overcoming the world with Christ's help is necessary for exaltation, including repentance and keeping the commandments.

to the title question : YES
get to heaven by merits? Seriously?
Why listen to Nephi when Paul clearly says:
A MAN IS JUSTIFIED BY FAITH WITHOUT THE DEEDS OF THE LAW ( Romans 3v28)
BUT TO HIM THAT WORTH NOT, BUT BELIEVETH ON HIM THAT JUSTIFIETH THE UNGODLY (all men), IT IS COUNTED UNTO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS Rom 4v5.
THATIF THOU SHALT CONFESS WITH THY MOUTH THE LORD JESUS, AND SHALT BELIEVE IN THINE HEART THAT GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, THOU SHALT BE SAVED Rom10v9. I am saved the moment I believe. My good works are the result of salvation and in no way MERIT or add security to my salvation. IT IS BY FAITH ALONE
FAITH COMES BY HEARING AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD not the word of Nephi. Rom 10v17
ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS ACCOUNTED TO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS Gal 3v6
all faith is based without any work, and BEFORE the law came (as in Abraham's case).
A GIFT:
But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. Rom 5v15
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2v8-10
Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.! rom 9v15

It is a gift from God from him to us to allow us to believe and understand in our hearts that Jesus paid it all, all for me.
By paying for a gift after it has been given or to compensate the giver is mere insult and disrespect. we do good works out of thanks without any merit for salvation being incorporated into our works- Love is not earned nor is it meritous- it is just love. You don't love a husband or wife to earn a back rub or meal out or their company- you LOVE because you LOVE.
